Box Jellyfish
Chironex fleckeri
The box jellyfish overturns nearly everything the word "jellyfish" implies. It does not drift: it swims actively and with purpose, at a couple of knots, and it steers. And it has eyes β twenty-four of them, in four clusters, including several with corneas, lenses and retinas thaβ¦
Did you know?
- A single Box Jellyfish contains enough venom to kill more than 60 adult humans.
- It has 24 eyes β some with real lenses and retinas that form images β despite having no brain at all. Certain eyes are weighted so they always point straight up, letting it navigate by the mangrove canopy above the water. It swims actively and steers, rather than drifting like other jellyfish. Its venom can cause cardiac arrest within minutes, and the animal is nearly invisible in water.
