A stray brown spaniel named 'Dumpy' is credited as the foundation dog for the entire Boykin Spaniel breed.
The Boykin Spaniel is the official state dog of South Carolina, where it originated in the early 1900s. It was specifically bred to fit comfortably in the small boats used by hunters in the Wateree River Swamp. Boykins are excellent swimmers and have webbed toes to aid in retrieving waterfowl.
