- A bite from the Brazilian Wandering Spider can sometimes cause priapism, a painful and prolonged erection in humans.
- Many spiders found in banana shipments and reported as Phoneutria are actually Cupiennius, a harmless look-alike genus that is often misidentified even by hospital staff. Phoneutria are large, with a leg span around 15 cm, and they hunt other spiders, insects, small lizards and even mice. Unlike most spiders, they can and do run at a perceived threat rather than away from it, which is the source of much of the reputation.
