- Despite being called a porcupine, genetic studies suggest they are more closely related to spiny rats than to true New World porcupines.
- Bristle-spined Porcupines have a prehensile tail that helps them grasp branches while climbing. Their spines are thinner and more flexible than those of other porcupines, providing unique camouflage. They are one of the only living members of their genus.
