- Brown hyenas can travel up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) in a single night while foraging for food.
- Cubs are raised communally at a single den, and adults, including subordinate males and females who are not the mother, carry food back to it — cooperative provisioning that spotted hyenas do not do. Brown hyenas will bury surplus food and return to it. Despite a fearsome reputation among farmers, they rarely kill livestock, and stomach content studies find their diet is overwhelmingly scavenged carrion, wild fruit and insects.
