Did you know?
- The brown tree snake's accidental introduction to Guam is considered one of the most devastating examples of invasive species impact, leading to the near-total loss of the island's native forest birds.
- In 2021 researchers filming the snakes discovered an entirely new form of snake locomotion: brown tree snakes climb smooth vertical poles by forming a lasso with their own body, gripping the cylinder in a loop and inching upward β a movement never seen in any snake before, and one that defeated the "snake-proof" poles used to protect bird nest boxes. The snakes are mildly venomous and rear-fanged, and while dangerous to birds they are not a serious threat to adult humans. Sniffer dogs are stationed at Guam's ports specifically to stop the snake reaching Hawaii.
