Burrowing Owl
Athene cunicularia
The burrowing owl is an owl that lives in a hole in the ground, is active in daylight, and stands on absurdly long legs β every one of those is unusual for an owl. Across most of the western United States it does not dig, but moves into a burrow already excavated by prairie dogsβ¦
Did you know?
- Unlike most owls, Burrowing Owls are often active during the day, especially during the early morning and late afternoon.
- Burrowing owls cache surplus food in their tunnels and have been found with dozens of rodents stockpiled at once. They will bob and bow at the burrow entrance when agitated, a comic, mechanical motion that is actually a distance-judging behaviour. Unlike most owls, males are often paler than females, because males spend more time in the sun and their plumage bleaches.
