- Butterflyfish are so dependent on coral reefs that their populations can rapidly decline if reefs are damaged or destroyed.
- Butterflyfish often swim in pairs, especially during breeding season, and some species mate for life. Their colorful patterns not only confuse predators but can also help them recognize each other. The 'false eye spot' near their tail can mislead predators about the direction the fish is facing.
