Caddisfly
Trichoptera spp.
Caddisfly larvae are underwater builders. Most spin silk from modified salivary glands โ a silk that cures in water, which is a genuinely difficult chemical problem and is being studied intensively as a template for surgical adhesives that can bond wet tissue โ and use it to gluโฆ
Did you know?
- Adult caddisflies are weak fliers and are often mistaken for small moths, but they are more closely related to butterflies.
- The French artist Hubert Duprat removed caddisfly larvae from their cases and offered them gold flakes, pearls, opals and turquoise; the larvae dutifully built jewelled cases, which are now exhibited as artworks. Caddisflies are the closest living relatives of moths and butterflies โ Trichoptera and Lepidoptera are sister orders, and adult caddisflies look strikingly like small moths with hairy rather than scaled wings. Fly fishermen imitate caddis larvae, pupae and adults with more patterns than almost any other insect.
