- Every wild California Condor alive today is descended from just 27 individuals that were captured in the 1980s for a last-ditch captive breeding program.
- In 1987 only twenty-two California condors remained, and every one was taken into captivity to save the species. Chicks are raised with condor-shaped hand puppets so they never imprint on humans. Lead fragments from ammunition, swallowed while scavenging, are still the leading cause of death. Its bald head stays clean when pushed inside a carcass — feathers there would foul instantly.
