- Despite their tough appearance and strong jaws, California Sheephead start their lives as females and only become males if the social structure of their group requires it.
- California Sheephead are capable of changing sex from female to male, a process triggered by social and environmental cues. They use their large canine teeth to pry prey like sea urchins, crabs, and mollusks from rocks. Their jaws and teeth are highly adapted for crushing hard shells.
