- Despite being called 'tiger' salamanders, their stripes are actually spots, and each individual's pattern is unique, much like a fingerprint.
- California Tiger Salamanders can remain underground for up to 11 months a year, relying on rodent burrows for shelter. Their larvae are entirely aquatic and develop rapidly to survive in temporary ponds. Adults are known for their long migrations to and from breeding sites during the rainy season.
