- Unlike some other newts, the Carpathian newt often hybridizes with the smooth newt where their ranges overlap, producing viable offspring.
- Carpathian newts can tolerate cooler temperatures than many other newt species. Their skin secretes toxins as a defense mechanism against predators. During the breeding season, males develop a wavy crest along their back and tail.
