- The breed's origins trace back to two Newfoundland dogs rescued from a shipwreck in 1807, whose descendants were bred with local retrievers to create the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
- Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have a unique oily, water-resistant coat that helps them retrieve in icy waters. They are one of the few American-bred dog breeds recognized for their specialized working abilities. Their webbed feet make them exceptional swimmers.
