Chinese Giant Salamander
Andrias davidianus
The Chinese giant salamander is the largest amphibian on Earth, reaching 1.8 m, and it breathes almost entirely through its skin β which is why the loose folds and wrinkles along its flanks matter: they are surface area, and they require cold, fast, highly oxygenated mountain stβ¦
Did you know?
- The Chinese Giant Salamander can regenerate lost limbs, tail, and even parts of its organs, a remarkable ability among vertebrates.
- Its Chinese name means "infant fish", from a vocalisation that sounds unnervingly like a human baby crying. It has poor eyesight and hunts by detecting pressure waves through sensory nodes on its head and body, snapping sideways at anything that moves within reach. In 2018 a new species from the complex, Andrias sligoi, was described partly from a 1920s London Zoo specimen, and it may be the largest amphibian species that has ever lived.
