- Despite living in such remote areas, the Chiru population declined drastically due to illegal hunting for their prized wool, leading to significant conservation efforts in recent decades.
- Chiru possess one of the warmest natural fibers in the animal kingdom, known as shahtoosh, which unfortunately made them a target for poaching. These antelopes can survive at altitudes exceeding 5,000 meters, where oxygen levels are extremely low. During migration, female Chiru travel up to 300 km to reach traditional calving grounds.
