- Although they are land crabs, Christmas Island Red Crabs must return to the ocean to breed, releasing their eggs directly into the sea.
- Each year, tens of millions of red crabs migrate across Christmas Island in one of the world's most spectacular natural events. The crabs are so important that special crab bridges and tunnels have been constructed to help them safely cross roads during migration.
