Clown Loach
Chromobotia macracanthus
The clown loach conceals a switchblade under its eye. A sub-orbital spine sits in a groove beneath each eye and can be flicked out defensively; it will catch in a net, and it can draw blood from a careless hand. It also clicks audibly when excited, grinding its pharyngeal teeth โฆ
Did you know?
- Despite their popularity in aquariums, clown loaches rarely breed in captivity and most individuals are wild-caught.
- Clown loaches are enthusiastic snail-eaters and are widely used to clear pest snails out of planted aquariums. They will squeeze into implausibly narrow gaps in decor and driftwood, and it is normal to be unable to find one for days. In the wild they migrate up rivers to spawn during the rainy season, which is why simply keeping them in a stable tank never triggers breeding.
