- Some Coastal Giant Salamanders never leave the water, remaining in their larval form with external gills for their entire life—a phenomenon known as neoteny.
- Coastal Giant Salamanders can vocalize, emitting a croaky bark when threatened—unusual among salamanders. They are also capable of regenerating lost tails and limbs. Unlike many amphibians, their teeth are adapted to grasp prey securely.
