- Ingesting or handling the Colorado River Toad’s venom can be fatal to pets and harmful to humans, and its collection is illegal in several U.S. states.
- The Colorado River Toad produces a powerful venom containing 5-MeO-DMT, a hallucinogenic compound. It is the largest native toad in the United States, reaching lengths of up to 7 inches. Their calls are a distinctive low-pitched whirring, most often heard after heavy summer rains.
