- The common blue bottle fly is so attracted to decaying matter that it can detect odors from several kilometers away using specialized receptors on its antennae.
- Blue bottle flies have highly developed olfactory senses that help them locate food from long distances. Their larvae, known as maggots, are used in medicine to clean wounds by consuming dead tissue. Adults are strong fliers and can cover several kilometers in search of food or breeding sites.
