- In medieval Europe, cockchafers were once put on trial and even excommunicated by local courts for crop destruction.
- Cockchafers have specialized fan-shaped antennae that can detect pheromones over long distances. Their larvae can spend up to four years underground before emerging as adults. In the past, these beetles were so abundant that they were collected in the millions and even used as food for animals—and people.
