Common Marmoset
Callithrix jacchus
Callithrix jacchus is a squirrel-sized monkey of Brazil's Atlantic forest and dry caatinga that has abandoned nails for claws. Every digit except the big toe ends in a sharp, keeled claw, which lets a marmoset cling to a broad tree trunk like a woodpecker rather than gripping smโฆ
Did you know?
- Unlike many primates, common marmosets rely heavily on tree sap and gum, which they extract by gnawing holes in bark with specialized lower incisors.
- Marmosets take turns when they vocalise, waiting for the other animal to finish before replying โ a conversational rule once thought to be unique to humans among primates. They are among the fastest-breeding monkeys, with a female capable of producing two litters of twins a year. Introduced marmosets now live wild in Rio de Janeiro and along the Brazilian coast well outside their native range, where they raid the nests of native birds. Their gum-gouging leaves rows of neat oval scars on trees that persist for years and can be used to survey where they live.
