- Despite being amphibians, Common Mudpuppies never leave the water and breathe almost entirely through their gills.
- Mudpuppies are one of the few salamanders that vocalize, emitting a dog-like bark. They are paedomorphic, meaning they retain juvenile characteristics like external gills throughout their adult life. Mudpuppies can regenerate lost limbs, making them a subject of scientific research.
