- Despite being a mammal, the Common Tenrec does not have a fixed body temperature and can adjust its temperature much like reptiles.
- The Common Tenrec can have up to 32 young in a single litter, which is one of the largest litter sizes among mammals. Unlike most mammals, tenrecs have a low and variable body temperature and do not require as much energy to maintain warmth. Their spines are used for defense, and they can emit hissing or clicking sounds when threatened.
