- Unlike most crustaceans, common woodlice live entirely on land and have adapted specialized structures to breathe air.
- Woodlice are crustaceans, not insects, and breathe through gill-like structures that require moisture. They can aggregate in large groups to conserve humidity and avoid desiccation. Some woodlice can roll into a ball for protection, but the common woodlouse cannot.
