- Despite being called 'surgeonfish,' convict tangs have less pronounced scalpel-like spines on their tails compared to other members of their family.
- Convict tangs are named for their distinctive black 'prison stripe' markings. They are known for their ability to rapidly form large schools for both feeding and protection. Unlike many other tangs, convict tangs rarely display aggression towards one another, even in crowded conditions.
