Coquerel's Sifaka
Propithecus coquereli
Propithecus coquereli is a large lemur of the dry deciduous forests of northwestern Madagascar, best known outside Africa as the animal that played Zoboomafoo. Its locomotion is the whole story: it is a vertical clinger and leaper, sitting upright against a trunk and launching wโฆ
Did you know?
- Coquerel's Sifaka has a specialized digestive system that allows it to feed on tough, sometimes toxic leaves that other animals cannot eat.
- Sifakas can leap several times their body length between vertical trunks and routinely land on spiny, thorn-covered trees without apparent injury, gripping in the gaps between spines. Female dominance in lemurs is thought to be an adaptation to Madagascar's harsh, unpredictable seasons, where a breeding female's nutritional needs outrank a male's. Coquerel's sifaka has a strongly seasonal single birth, and infants ride on the mother's belly before shifting to her back. The species was long lumped with Verreaux's sifaka and only widely recognised as distinct in the last two decades.
