- Despite being fish, Corydoras catfish can survive in waters with low oxygen levels thanks to their unique ability to breathe atmospheric air.
- Corydoras catfish possess a special intestinal adaptation that allows them to absorb oxygen directly from swallowed air. Their bodies are covered in bony plates called scutes, providing extra protection against predators. When threatened, Corydoras can make a squeaking sound by rubbing their pectoral fins against their sockets.
