- The Coton de Tulear gets its name from the city of TulΓ©ar (now Toliara) in Madagascar and the French word for cotton, referencing its unique coat. Historically, they were favored by Malagasy royalty and were rarely found outside Madagascar until the 20th century. Their hypoallergenic coat makes them a popular choice for allergy sufferers.
