Dik-dik
Madoqua kirkii
A dik-dik is a five-kilogram antelope with a nose that works as an air conditioner. The elongated, flexible snout houses an expanded chamber lined with blood vessels, and by pumping air through it in a rapid bellows-like pant the animal cools its blood by evaporation without losโฆ
Did you know?
- Dik-diks rarely need to drink water, as they obtain most of their moisture from their food.
- A dik-dik pair does not tolerate its own grown offspring, and the young are driven out at around seven months, which keeps territories small and dense across suitable habitat. Because they are so easy to catch and hold territories that never move, dik-diks are heavily hunted for their skin, which is used for suede gloves. Their preorbital marking glands are large enough to be conspicuous as dark slits on the face and are one of the best field marks. They browse selectively on leaves and shoots and will follow elephants and monkeys to feed on foliage knocked down from above.
