- At one point, fewer than 100 adult Dusky Gopher Frogs were known to exist in the wild, making it one of the rarest amphibians in North America.
- Dusky Gopher Frogs use abandoned burrows of gopher tortoises and pocket gophers for shelter. Their tadpoles can detect and avoid predatory dragonfly larvae. The species has one of the smallest known ranges of any North American frog.
