- Dwarf Sirens have only three toes on each front limb, a unique trait among North American salamanders.
- Dwarf Sirens can survive temporary droughts by burrowing into the mud and entering a state of torpor. Unlike most salamanders, they retain their larval features, such as gills, throughout their lives (a condition called neoteny).
