- The Eastern Coral Snake's venom is among the most potent of any North American snake, but antivenom shortages have made treatment of bites more challenging in recent years.
- The coral snake's bright bands are a textbook example of warning colouration, and the harmless snakes that copy it are the standard classroom illustration of Batesian mimicry. It is a snake-eater, and it will take other coral snakes, so it is not immune to being eaten by its own kind. Its head is blunt with a black snout, which is another quick distinction from the mimics whose snouts are red. Because it is fossorial and secretive, most people who live inside its range never see one.
