- Despite their intimidating appearance and name, hellbenders are completely harmless to humans and play a crucial role in maintaining healthy stream ecosystems.
- Hellbenders breathe primarily through their skin, which must remain moist to function. Unlike most salamanders, they rarely leave the water and can live for decades. Males guard the eggs after females lay them, a rare trait among amphibians.
