Did you know?
- Despite their imposing size, Eastern Indigo Snakes are docile and rarely bite when handled.
- An indigo snake will eat almost anything it can overpower โ other snakes, turtles, small mammals, birds, frogs and even young gopher tortoises โ making it a genuine apex predator among reptiles in its range. It is one of the few snakes routinely described as unwilling to bite even when handled, which is why it survived so long in the pet trade before protection. Prescribed burning, which sounds destructive, is essential to its habitat: without regular fire the longleaf understorey chokes with shrubs and the whole system collapses. It ranges further per day than almost any other North American snake, which makes roads a leading cause of death.
