- Despite being highly aquatic, these turtles are frequently seen crossing land, sometimes traveling several kilometers to locate new habitats.
- The Eastern Long-necked Turtle can retract its head sideways under its shell rather than pulling it directly back. It can travel long distances overland to find new water sources, especially after heavy rains. Its musk glands can emit a pungent odor as a defense mechanism against predators.
