- Unlike most salamanders, the Eastern Red-backed Salamander does not have an aquatic larval stage; its young hatch directly into miniature adults.
- Eastern Red-backed Salamanders are entirely terrestrial throughout their lives and never require standing water to breed. They use chemical cues to recognize their territory and can drop their tails to escape predators. Some populations exhibit both color morphs in the same area.
