- The Egyptian tortoise is sometimes called the 'Kleinmann's tortoise' after Eduard Kleinmann, the German zoologist who first described the species in 1875.
- The Egyptian tortoise is so small it can fit in the palm of your hand. It is able to survive weeks without direct access to water, relying on moisture from its food. Unlike many tortoises, it is most active during dawn and dusk to avoid the desert heat.
