- Despite their name, electric eels are not true eels but belong to the knifefish family.
- Electric eels can produce shocks of up to 600 volts, enough to incapacitate a human or stun large prey. They breathe air at the water's surface, as they have poorly developed gills. Electric eels are capable of both low-voltage and high-voltage discharges, using different types for navigation and hunting.
