- Despite being tortoises, elongated tortoises are surprisingly good climbers and can traverse rough, uneven terrain with ease.
- Elongated tortoises are known to bury themselves under leaf litter to avoid extreme heat. Their shells can change color slightly with humidity and age, providing camouflage. Males can be distinguished from females by their longer tails and more concave plastrons.
