Emperor Scorpion
Pandinus imperator

Did you know?
- The Emperor Scorpionβs venom is so mild that a bee sting is often more painful to humans.
- The fluorescence appears only after the cuticle has hardened, so a newly moulted scorpion does not glow β which is how the effect was traced to the outer layer rather than to the body fluid. Emperor scorpions hunt largely by sensing vibration through slit sensilla in their legs and comb-like pectines dragged along the ground, so they can find prey in total darkness without seeing it. Their popularity in the pet trade led to such heavy collection that they are listed on CITES Appendix II. Adults are jet black, but the same animal is pale tan for a day or two after moulting.
