Ethiopian Wolf
Canis simensis
Canis simensis is the rarest canid on Earth, with fewer than about 500 mature adults left, all of them confined to a handful of Afroalpine islands above roughly 3,000 m in the Ethiopian highlands โ the Bale Mountains hold more than half of them. It looks like a long-legged, russโฆ
Did you know?
- There are fewer than 500 Ethiopian Wolves left in the wild, making them one of the rarest canids on Earth.
- Ethiopian wolves have been recorded walking calmly among grazing gelada herds, apparently ignored by the monkeys and by the rodents, which lower their guard around the geladas โ letting the wolf catch far more rodents than it does when hunting alone. This is one of the very few documented cases of a wild carnivore exploiting a herbivore herd as cover. Despite its name and appearance, it is not closely related to jackals; genetically it is a grey wolf relative that reached Africa and specialised. Female pups leave the pack while males usually stay, the reverse of the pattern in most canids, because there is simply nowhere for them to disperse to.
