- Despite their size and fierce appearance, Eurasian Eagle-owl chicks are vulnerable to predation and often rely on their parents for several months after hatching.
- In 2007 an eagle-owl nicknamed Bubi repeatedly landed on the crossbar during a Euro qualifying match in Helsinki, delaying play, and was subsequently named Helsinki's citizen of the year — a good illustration of how comfortably the species has moved into cities. Its orange eyes are among the largest of any owl, and its retina is packed with rods, allowing it to hunt in light levels where a human sees nothing. Because it takes other raptors, reintroducing eagle-owls into a region has sometimes had unwelcome knock-on effects on rarer birds of prey. An eagle-owl can live over twenty years in the wild and pairs often reuse the same cliff ledge for generations.
