- Despite their delicate appearance, European peacock butterflies can survive freezing winter temperatures by entering a state of dormancy.
- When threatened, the European peacock butterfly produces a hissing sound by rubbing its wings together to deter predators. Its vivid eyespots not only startle birds but also mimic the eyes of larger animals. Remarkably, adults can enter diapause and survive cold winters by hibernating in sheltered places.
