- Despite their aquatic nature, European Pond Turtles can travel over a kilometer on land, especially during the nesting season.
- European Pond Turtles can remain submerged for up to an hour, relying on cloacal respiration to absorb oxygen. They hibernate during the winter, often buried in mud at the bottom of ponds. Females may travel significant distances over land to find suitable nesting sites.
