- The European Wildcat is one of the ancestors of the modern domestic cat, but it remains genetically distinct and does not readily interbreed in the wild.
- European Wildcats are highly territorial and avoid human contact, making them difficult to observe in the wild. Unlike domestic cats, they rarely meow, instead communicating with hisses, growls, and other sounds. Their bushy tail is used for balance and acts as a clear distinguishing feature from feral domestic cats.
