Did you know?
- Some fire salamanders can live over 50 years in captivity, making them one of the longest-lived amphibians.
- A fungal disease, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, arrived in Europe from Asia in the trade in pet salamanders and effectively annihilated the Dutch fire salamander population, with crashes exceeding 99 percent within a few years of its detection in 2010 β it is now the defining threat to the species. Their yellow-on-black patterning is unique to each individual, so researchers can identify wild salamanders from photographs alone without any marking. Females can store sperm for years and produce young from a single mating long afterwards. Larvae in the stream are cannibalistic and will eat their smaller siblings when food is short.
