- The Firefly Squid’s bioluminescent displays are so bright that they can sometimes be seen from the surface, lighting up entire sections of coastline during their spawning season.
- The Firefly Squid can control the intensity and pattern of its bioluminescence, which is used for communication, camouflage, and attracting mates. Its light shows are so famous that night-time viewing festivals are held in Toyama Bay, Japan. Unlike many squids, it has eyes adapted to both deep and shallow water vision.
