- During breeding, Firemouth cichlids become highly territorial and will fiercely defend their nestβeven against much larger fish.
- Firemouth cichlids are named for the brilliant red coloring on their throats, which they flare to intimidate rivals and attract mates. Both parents take turns guarding and fanning the eggs to keep them oxygenated. They can change their coloration intensity depending on mood or environmental conditions.
